So the next step is to get all the hardware in its proper place. I removed the desktop hard drive from the enclosure and replaced it with the failing hard drive from the laptop. Since the enclosure is designed for a 3.5" desktop hard drive, a bracket would need to be used to secure the 2.5" laptop hard drive. Fortunately I had one from my 30GB solid state drive, unfortunately it would mount the drive upside down to the enclosure. So I had to leave the drive unsecured to mount it. The enclosure could connect by eSATA or USB, I used the USB because that was what the laptop has.
Next I installed the new hard drive in the laptop. This was a pretty simple affair of removing a few screws sliding out the SSD I had been using and putting the mounting bracket on the new drive and sliding it back in place.
I plugged in the USB stick and connected the hard drive enclosure to the other USB port. I am now ready to start the process.
