So Windows does not like to be cloned. I understand the reasoning behind that, to stop their software from being copied all over the place safeguards were put in place. Really it shouldn't be an issue more than once for anyone who has a legitimate copy of Windows, when the nag window pops-up, find your CD key and enter the 25 character code and you're ready to rock.
The problem is in my experience most computers with Windows pre-installed don't come with a CD that has the key on it. Manufacturers are required, as far as I know, to include a sticker that has the key printed on it. A Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity, usually it is stuck right to your laptop. The unfortunate thing there is that the number wears off, though oddly I can still read "Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity" clear as day on the sticker. I of course did not write it down anywhere else, so I looked to both Microsoft and Lenovo online help and forums to figure out what to do. Lenovo's site didn't offer really any help for my discontinued system, though I do recall them being helpful when I had similar issues after the upgrade from Vista to Windows 7. Microsoft wanted me to just buy a new copy of Windows, and their forums directed me to getting a report and sending it off to someone who would help me decipher it.
All I needed was my CD key. Somewhere in all those forums and how-tos I saw someone recommend Magical Jelly Bean KeyFinder. After a quick download and install, I ran the program and it spit out a concise report that included my CD key. I just input that in the Windows Activation area, which can be found by going to Control Panel > System and Security > System, then scroll to the bottom. It will have an area for Windows activation, just click the "Change product key" link and enter the code. Happily, no more nag pop-ups.
UPDATE: Well it seems I wrote about that too soon, because I have had the authentication pop-up appear twice since then. Looks like I have a little more work to do.
